Most portraits in this set show Abraham Lincoln himself, so this glass negative stands apart by putting his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, at the center. It was made in the early 1860s, roughly between 1860 and 1865, using the wet collodion process, in which a photographer coated a glass plate with a light-sensitive solution and had to expose and develop it while still damp. The plate is part of the Brady-Handy Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of work tied to Mathew Brady and his studio, which documented many public figures of the Civil War era. The period was one when portraits of the First Lady and her husband circulated widely as photographs and prints, so this negative offers a glimpse of how the Lincolns were presented to the public during the war.
