Abraham Lincoln served as the sixteenth president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865, guiding the country through the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. Portraits of him from this period were widely reproduced, and they helped shape the public image of a man who rose from a log-cabin childhood in Kentucky and Indiana to lead the Union. Pictures in this series show him as the careful, unsmiling statesman many Americans remember, a figure who came to stand for national unity and the preservation of the republic.
