The broadside's headline offers $100,000 for the capture of the men behind Abraham Lincoln's assassination, and it is illustrated with photoprints of John H. Surratt, John Wilkes Booth, and David E. Herold. Printed notices like this one circulated widely in 1865 as the government pursued the conspirators. Booth was shot in a Virginia barn in late April of that year, and Herold was captured with him, but Surratt slipped away and was not taken until 1866. The sheet shows how the search was framed for the public, as a national manhunt with faces attached to the wanted names.
