The hearse carrying Abraham Lincoln's body stood in Springfield, Illinois, the city he had left for Washington in 1861 and where he was finally laid to rest. The funeral train had brought the president's remains home in May 1865, and the procession through the town drew large crowds who lined the streets to pay their respects. Photographer S.M. Fassett of Chicago recorded the scene, and the picture captures the formal mourning trappings and the solemn character of the funeral procession that followed Lincoln's assassination.
