This view shows the seated figure of Abraham Lincoln while it was still being assembled inside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, before the monument was finished. Sculptor Daniel Chester French designed the statue, and the Piccirilli Brothers carved it from white Georgia marble in blocks that were then fitted together on site. The memorial was dedicated in 1922, and the photograph, issued by the Washington firm Underwood & Underwood, captures the construction stage that few visitors ever saw.
