The Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, and it is the setting that gives this view its weight. Dedicated in 1922, the marble temple houses a seated statue of Abraham Lincoln by Daniel Chester French, and its colonnade of 36 Doric columns, one for each state in the Union at Lincoln's death, was designed by Henry Bacon. The memorial became a gathering place for national moments, most famously Marian Anderson's 1939 concert and the 1963 March on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech on its steps.
