Looking straight up into the dome of the United States Capitol, this view shows Constantino Brumidi's fresco *The Apotheosis of Washington*. Begun around 1865, the painting shows George Washington rising into heaven amid allegorical figures and classical gods, a theme meant to connect the first president with the nation's founding ideals. Brumidi, an Italian-born artist who spent decades decorating the Capitol, painted it shortly after the Civil War, when the building was still being finished. The photograph itself was taken in 2008 and shared under a Creative Commons license.
