Lower Yosemite Falls, the lower of the two drops that make up the valley's best-known waterfall, is the subject here, and the albumen print dates to about 1865, only a few years after Congress set aside the Yosemite Valley grant in 1864. Photographers working in the Sierra Nevada at this time used large glass-plate cameras, and the mammoth-plate format captured fine detail in the rock and water that smaller images could not. Prints of this kind were sold to a public curious about the far West, and they helped shape early impressions of Yosemite as a wonder worth preserving.
