Yosemite Falls, the tallest waterfall in North America, is the subject here, shown in an albumen print from around 1865. The Yosemite Valley had been set aside by Congress in 1864 as a public trust, a step that came just as photographers were arriving with large cameras to document its granite walls and cascades. Albumen prints like this one were the standard method of the 1860s, made from glass negatives and valued for their fine detail and warm, brownish tones. The image reflects the early effort to present the valley to a national audience that had mostly known it only through word of mouth.
