Few views in the valley pair a balanced granite boulder with the great falls, and this print frames the two together, with the rock perched in the foreground and Yosemite Falls rising beyond it. The image was made by the photochrome process, in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to a set of stone lithographic plates, each inked with a single color and printed in layers. Detroit Photographic Company held the American rights to the method in the 1890s and early 1900s, and its colored views of national parks sold widely as souvenirs. The hand-applied tones give the granite and falling water a soft, painterly look that was prized by tourists of the period.
