Yosemite Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in North America, is the subject of this color photochrom print from about 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company made such prints by a process that combined photography with lithographic color stones, giving the scenery a painted softness that appealed to tourists who wanted souvenirs of the valley. Yosemite had become a federal national park in 1890, so by the late 1890s visitors were arriving in growing numbers to see its falls. The print was registered for copyright, which left an official record of its publication.
