Lower Yosemite Falls is the subject here, the lower of the two tiers that make up the valley's tallest waterfall, which drops in a series of cascades from the rim of the granite walls. Made around 1865, this albumen print belongs to the decade when photographers first brought Yosemite Valley to public attention, a few years after Congress set the valley aside for public use in 1864. The albumen process, with its fine detail and warm tone, was the standard for landscape views of the period. Its large format captures the falls and the rock around them in the sharp detail that made such images widely sold to viewers who would never see the valley themselves.
