Framed by a screen of tree trunks, Yosemite Falls comes into view as a pale ribbon dropping over the granite cliffs of Yosemite Valley. The photograph dates to about 1899 and is a photoprint copyrighted by H.G. Peabody of Boston, a firm that issued many views of the valley and sold them to tourists who arrived by rail and stagecoach. The record notes that its data come from a caption card and have not been verified, so the exact date and location details should be read with that in mind. Peabody's compositions often used foliage to hold the eye and suggest depth, a habit worth noticing when comparing this view with the open panoramas of the same falls.
