Vernal Fall, the 317-foot cascade on the Merced River near the head of Yosemite Valley, is the subject here, and the record ties this view to Anthony's Photographic Bulletin for September 1895, where it was reproduced as an illustration. That placement matters: the magazine was a trade journal for photographers, so the image circulated among working practitioners as a model of landscape work as much as a scenic view. Yosemite was a favorite subject for American photographers in the 1880s and 1890s, when the valley's falls drew steady crowds and the new halftone process made photographs practical to print in periodicals.
