El Pizmo Beach, as the name was often spelled in 1906, was a small seaside settlement on the Central Coast of San Luis Obispo County, California. Its main draw was the wide, hard-packed sand beach and the Pismo clams that visitors dug at low tide, a pastime that had already made the shoreline a favorite destination for families and sportsmen. The town sat well off the main population centers, so most people reached it by wagon or automobile from San Luis Obispo or by rail on the Southern Pacific line that served the county's coast. Around 1906, the beach was more a place for summer outings and camping than a settled town, and local life still revolved around the county seat and the farms and ranches of the surrounding hills.
