Greenwater, in the arid Greenwater Valley on the eastern edge of Death Valley country in Inyo County, was a copper mining camp during the boom of 1906. Prospectors and investors had been drawn to the district's copper showings, and promoters laid out a townsite that quickly filled with miners, teamsters, and merchants. Supplies, water, and ore all had to move by wagon across desert distances, which made freight costs the central worry for everyone there. The camp's fortunes depended on the price of copper and on whether capital kept flowing into the claims, and both proved uncertain. Residents of the valley would have known Greenwater as one more hopeful strike in a region already famous for its borax and silver, and for the hard work of getting anything out of it.
