Pacific Grove, California, in 1906 was a small seaside town on the tip of the Monterey Peninsula, founded in 1875 as a Methodist camp meeting ground and still shaped by its strict temperance rules. Its residents depended on visitors, summer cottages, and the fishing and canning trade across the bay in Monterey, where sardine packing was the region's main industry. The Southern Pacific line and the Hotel Del Monte, a few miles away, drew wealthy tourists who spent time on the nearby coast and golf links. Townspeople knew Pacific Grove for its quiet Victorian cottages, its churches, and the rocky shore at Lovers Point. Only months before this view was taken, the great San Francisco earthquake had reminded Californians how fragile their coastal towns could be.
