Salinas, the seat of Monterey County, sat in the middle of the Salinas Valley in 1906, where irrigated farmland fed a steady flow of crops to markets by rail. The Southern Pacific line through town carried grain, beans, and vegetables out of the valley, and the Spreckels sugar factory, opened in 1899, made the local beet harvest a major seasonal event for growers and workers alike. Town life centered on the courthouse, churches, and the commercial blocks along Main Street, where merchants served ranchers who came in on weekends. The valley's farm wealth also drew a mix of Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, and European laborers, and residents of the period would have known Salinas first as a place where agriculture set the pace of daily life.
