Its captions make bold claims: the district is called the largest in the world, spread over 135 acres, with 4,500 firms and $800,000,000 in capital. Those figures come from a commercial color lithograph of about 1886 by J.J. Fogerty of New York, so read them as boosters' claims rather than exact counts. Carts and a horse railroad car crowd the Broadway roadway, a reminder of how wholesale dry goods houses clustered in lower Manhattan and supplied retailers nationwide. The print later appeared in a Yeshiva University Museum exhibition on the garment trade and American Jewry.
