Two cablegrams, one from General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, and one from Edward N. Hurley, chairman of the United States Shipping Board, give this 1918 poster an unusual message: it speaks through the words of military and maritime leaders rather than a soldier or a slogan. The Emergency Fleet Corporation, the Shipping Board's construction arm, issued such posters to promote shipbuilding, since American troops and supplies depended on ocean transport to France. Thomsen-Ellis Co. printed this color lithograph.
