Its title, "Hunger knows no armistice," makes the poster's argument: the fighting of World War I ended with the November 1918 armistice, but famine did not. M. Leone Bracker designed this 1919 color lithograph for Near East Relief, the charity that worked to feed and shelter survivors of war and massacre in the Ottoman Empire and the Caucasus. The poster was sponsored by the United States Food Administration, the wartime agency led by Herbert Hoover, and its subjects, women and children, reflect the relief group's focus on civilians. Its campaign headquarters address appears in the notes, which places the appeal in the American fundraising drives of 1919.
