Printed in 1917, this lithograph appeals for a $30,000,000 campaign on behalf of the American Committee for Relief in the Near East, which named Armenia, Greece, Syria, and Persia as the regions it aimed to help. The poster's title, "Lest They Perish," echoes the urgency of the period, when the Ottoman Empire's wartime violence against Armenians and other Christian communities had left large numbers of civilians displaced, starving, and dependent on outside aid. Its listing of Cleveland H. Dodge as treasurer points to the financial backing behind the drive. The poster is also a useful record of how American wartime fundraising framed humanitarian relief as a public duty.
