Asking American readers to "save Serbia our ally," this 1916 color lithograph by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen directs donations to the Serbian Relief Committee of America. It is catalogued under Serbian military personnel and refugees, reflecting the fate of a nation that had been overrun by Austro-Hungarian, German and Bulgarian forces in late 1915. The retreat of Serbia's army across the mountains of Albania cost many lives to exposure, hunger and disease. Steinlen was better known in Paris for his illustrations of city life, and his graphic style gives this wartime appeal its emotional force.
