The record names the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's own account of its work in 1914, issued in 1915, so this picture belongs to the charity's effort to report on its service in the first year of the war. The RNLI, founded in 1824, relied on volunteer crews launching from stations around the British coast, and its annual reports listed each rescue and the lives saved. Wartime conditions, including the call-up of men to the armed forces and heavy shipping traffic near the coast, made that work especially demanding.
