This 1917 color lithograph carries the slogan "Remember the girl behind the man behind the gun," a line that puts the young woman at the center of the war effort rather than the soldier or the weapon. It was issued by the Young Women's Christian Association's War Work Council, which that year began organizing services for American soldiers and for women drawn into war industries and volunteer work. The poster reflects the home-front argument of the period: that the war depended as much on women's labor, morale and support as on the men in uniform. Its initials, "M.B.," are the only credit given for the designer.
