Its border is what sets it apart: a frame of labeled medical supplies, including drains, compresses, bandages, a fracture pillow, and an elbow rest. Dated 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, the poster reflects a period when relief organizations depended heavily on volunteers to roll bandages and make surgical dressings for hospitals. Its subjects, the medical side of the war and the nurses who handled these supplies, show how much of the war effort rested on women's unpaid labor. Thomas Tryon's color lithograph is a useful record of how war relief was promoted to the public.
