Sailors gathered over a meal in a club setting set this poster apart from the many wartime appeals that show combat or soldiers under arms. Printed in 1918 by Heywood Strasser & Voigt Litho. Co. of New York, it promoted the United War Work Campaign, a combined fundraising drive for the welfare services that supported American troops, including canteens and recreation halls. The caption, "A club dinner," points to the campaign's aim of offering servicemen a taste of home far from their families, and the bright color and everyday scene show how the home front was asked to look after those in uniform.
