Few wartime appeals were as blunt about what soldiers wanted as this 1915 lithograph, which asks civilians to pay 25 cents so that a dollar's worth of tobacco can reach Canadian troops overseas. Its caption, "Arf a mo Kaiser!", gives the request a cheeky, soldierly voice and jabs at the German emperor, a stock target of Allied propaganda. Tobacco was a common comfort in the trenches, and funds like this one, gathered through the Over-Seas Club, turned small donations into cigarettes and pipe tobacco for men far from home. The poster shows how home-front campaigns mixed humor with a plea for everyday support.
