Few wartime posters name a dollar goal as plainly as this one: a $30,000,000 campaign on behalf of the American Committee for Relief in the Near East, with the aid aimed at Armenia, Greece, Syria, and Persia. The 1918 appeal was produced under the Committee on Public Information's Division of Pictorial Publicity, the federal office that commissioned posters for wartime causes. The phrase "Lest we perish" was a direct plea to American donors, who were being asked to help survivors of the violence and famine in the Ottoman Empire during and after World War I. Cleveland H. Dodge, listed as treasurer, was a New York philanthropist who was active in the relief effort.
