Pushcart trade and street life on the city's East Side are the subjects here, with peddlers and market crowds packed into the scene. Made in the early 1930s, when the Depression was squeezing many families who worked on the street, the woodcut belongs to the Realist tradition of printmakers who recorded ordinary urban labor. The sheet is signed and titled in pencil and numbered as an edition of ten, and it was later part of the Ben and Beatrice Goldstein Collection and an exhibition on Jewish life in America at the Library of Congress.
