Three ironworkers balance on a single steel girder, with rising steam and a jumble of rooftops filling the space behind them. The drawing is in charcoal heightened with Chinese white, and an inscription on the back is dated July 11, 1904, a period when New York was in the middle of its steel-frame building boom. The catalog suggests it was probably made for the Century magazine but never published, so it reads as an artist's study of the men who raised the city's new buildings. The white highlights on the shoulders and in the steam stand out against the dark charcoal.
