The Tea Water Pump, shown here in this color silkscreen, was a public pump in colonial New York, and its name reflected the belief that its spring water was clean enough for brewing tea. In the 1750s, residents relied on wells, springs and pumps like this one, since the city had no piped water system yet. The Federal Art Project produced the print around 1936 as part of a WPA series on the history of municipal services, linking a colonial public amenity to the government works of the Depression years.
