The first poster in this WPA series sets out the earliest public water supply in what is now New York City, a sign of the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. The record dates the print to 1699, but its subject headings place the scene in the 1650s, when the town's residents first relied on a shared public well rather than private sources. The poster was made in the late 1930s under the Works Progress Administration, when federal art projects produced silkscreen posters that presented local civic history to the public. Its focus on a basic municipal service shows how much of the city's early government grew out of practical needs like clean water.
