The McLean family's Northwest Washington property was called Friendship, a name tied to the surrounding neighborhood, and this view draws attention to the grounds as much as the house itself. The estate was connected to the city's newspaper world through John R. McLean, publisher of the *Washington Post*, and later to national fame through his daughter-in-law, Evalyn Walsh McLean, whose ownership of the Hope Diamond drew wide attention. The photograph is undated beyond the 1920s, a period when prosperous Washington families built large estates on the city's outskirts.
