Few of the Detroit Publishing Company's views are of warships, which makes this glass-plate negative of the U.S.S. *New York* an unusual entry in the collection. The armored cruiser was built in Philadelphia and commissioned in 1893, the same period this photograph is dated to. Her most famous service came during the Spanish-American War in 1898, when she served as the flagship of the North Atlantic Squadron under Rear Admiral William T. Sampson off Cuba. The Detroit company, known for its tinted views of American landscapes and cities, photographed many subjects for sale to travelers, so this image shows how the nation's steel navy was presented to the public at the turn of the century.
