This portrait shows Captain French Ensor Chadwick, who commanded the cruiser U.S.S. New York, one of the steel warships the United States built in the early 1890s as it expanded its modern navy. Chadwick later served as chief of staff to Rear Admiral William T. Sampson during the Spanish-American War, when the New York was Sampson's flagship off Cuba. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of views of American places and people around 1900, produced this image, so it reflects the period's taste for formal officer portraits tied to the ships they commanded.
