Admiral Norman von Heldenreich Farquhar stepping off the armored cruiser USS *New York* is the moment this 1899 view captures, a formal departure from a ship that was then one of the Navy's showpieces. The cruiser had joined the fleet in the 1890s and saw action in the Spanish-American War of 1898, a few years before this photograph was made. The image is an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American places and people at the turn of the century.
