The U.S.S. New York was a steel-hulled armored cruiser commissioned by the U.S. Navy in 1893, and this print shows her as she looked in 1899, when she was among the most celebrated warships of the day. Detroit Publishing Company, the Michigan firm known for its photochrom prints, issued views like this one, which were hand-colored from original photographs and sold widely to tourists and collectors. The ship's service during the Spanish-American War of 1898 had made her a symbol of American naval power, and the image captures that moment of national pride.
