Few buildings on Broadway were as ornate as the Ansonia, a residential hotel on the Upper West Side whose mansard roofs and sculpted facade rose between 73rd and 74th Streets. Developer William E. D. Stokes built it in stages around the turn of the twentieth century, and it was marketed to residents who wanted hotel service with the privacy of an apartment. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American cities and landscapes, recorded the building on a large glass negative in the early 1900s, while construction was still recent. Among the building's well-known residents was the opera singer Enrico Caruso.
