Few early subway features were as striking as the street-level kiosks, and this view shows them at East 23rd Street, where the street name appears on a building nearby. The Interborough Rapid Transit line had opened in October 1904, and its stations used ornamental booths like these to shelter stair entrances and exits from weather and street traffic. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American cities and landscapes around 1900 to 1910, so it records the new system at street level in its first years of service.
