Elevated tracks ran on steel structures above Manhattan's avenues, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, made around 1905, captures one of those lines as the city was turning toward underground travel. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its broad survey of American places in the early 1900s, made the plate. Elevated trains had carried passengers over the streets since the 1870s, and the first subway opened in 1904, shifting attention below ground. Study the columns and track framing to see how the overhead structure shaped the street beneath it.
