Sandy Hook, the sandy spit that marks the entrance to New York harbor, is the setting for this view of the yacht Sappho leaving on July 28, 1869, bound for Europe. Charles R. Parsons and Lyman W. Atwater are credited as the artists, and their signatures appear on the image. Currier & Ives published many sporting and maritime scenes like this one in the 1860s, when wealthy New Yorkers were building fast yachts and racing them along the coast. A private yacht sailing for Europe was still unusual then, which gives the departure its sense of a notable venture.
