The print presents the yacht Norseman as a New York vessel, placing it within the city's busy yachting culture of the early 1880s. Currier & Ives, the Manhattan firm that issued this chromolithograph around 1882, built a large business on colorful prints of ships, sport and everyday American life, sold cheaply to a broad public. Yachting was then a fashionable pastime for wealthy families, who raced their boats in New York Harbor and off Sandy Hook. Pictures like this one let viewers share in that polished, competitive world.
