Leaving Sandy Hook on August 16, 1869, the schooner yacht Meteor of New York is shown setting out on a crossing to Europe. Sandy Hook, at the tip of the New Jersey shore, was the last land many outbound ships passed before reaching the open Atlantic, so a departure scene there suggests the start of a long voyage. The New York firm Currier & Ives issued this color chromolithograph, drawn by Charles R. Parsons and Lyman W. Atwater. It reflects the growing postwar interest in yachting as a display of American shipbuilding and seamanship.
