The U.S.S. New York, an armored cruiser commissioned in 1893, is the subject here, with its Marine guard drawn up for inspection. The ship later served as the flagship of Rear Admiral William T. Sampson's squadron in the Spanish-American War in 1898, a conflict that pushed the United States into a new role overseas. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, was best known for travel views, so its record of naval routine is less typical of the firm's work. The uniformed men standing at attention show the discipline of a peacetime fleet in the years before that war.
