Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran this wood engraving by Frederick Burr Opper in its August 2, 1879 issue, presenting New York's street-cleaning efforts as a kind of public health campaign. The cartoon's title promises a look at how city authorities guard against summer epidemics, a real concern in the 1870s, when cholera and yellow fever outbreaks had pushed sanitation to the front of municipal debate. Opper, who would later become known for his comic drawings, uses the engraving's pointed humor to comment on the garbage and filth that accumulated in the city's poorer districts during hot months. The print offers a useful view of how the press framed urban sanitation for a general readership.
