Nassau Street in lower Manhattan, photographed around 1905, shows a commercial thoroughfare in the years when the city's streets were crowded with storefronts, horse-drawn traffic and early electric trolleys. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold views of American cities as postcards and lantern slides. Nassau Street runs north from Wall Street toward City Hall Park, so it sat at the heart of the financial district, and a plate like this records the working streetscape that surrounded the banks and offices there. The glass format gives the image a sharp, detailed record of signs, facades and street life from the period.
