Broad Street in lower Manhattan, photographed around 1905, shows men gathered in the roadway for the curb market, the informal trading that happened outside the formal exchange rooms. Brokers who could not get onto the floor of the nearby New York Stock Exchange traded shares here in the open air, and the street filled with clerks, runners and onlookers. The negative is a glass dry plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large catalog of American scenes from the early twentieth century. It is a useful record of how Wall Street's business spilled into the city streets.
