Broad Street, a narrow canyon in lower Manhattan, is the subject here, and its cataloged tags point to the stock exchanges that clustered around Wall Street. The New York Stock Exchange building on Broad Street opened in 1903, so a view from around the suggested 1905 date would show a street recently anchored by that grand structure. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its early twentieth-century photographic survey of American places. Its donation to the Library of Congress in 1949 preserved a useful record of the city's commercial life.
