Eighth Avenue at 110th Street, at the northern edge of Central Park, is the spot this view records. The Manhattan Elevated's Eighth Avenue line ran on iron structures above the street, and its tracks cast shadows over the wagons, carriages and pedestrians below. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative sometime between about 1900 and 1910, when the elevated trains were a relatively new part of daily life in the city. Its photographers documented American cities and landscapes for commercial sale, so the image also shows how a busy uptown avenue looked in those years.
